The Refrigerant Transition: What You Need to Know
As part of a nationwide effort to reduce environmental impact and align with global climate policies, the HVAC industry is moving away from R410A refrigerant. At Pioneer, we’re preparing for this shift by launching new systems that use next-generation refrigerants like R32 and R454B.
Here's what this means for you:
Why Is This Transition Happening?
Why Is This Transition Happening?
This change is driven by updated U.S. environmental regulations, specifically the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act, which aims to reduce the use of high global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants.
R410A, while widely used, has a relatively high GWP (2088). In contrast:
- R32 and R454B offer much lower GWP ratings (around 800).
- Both options are more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.
- These refrigerants are classified as A2L, meaning they are mildly flammable, but safe when installed per updated code.
The ultimate goal is to transition the HVAC industry toward more sustainable technology without sacrificing performance.
What Does This Mean for R410A Systems Already Installed?
What Does This Mean for R410A Systems Already Installed?
If you already own an R410A-based system, don’t worry. Nothing changes for you in the short term. Here’s what to know:
- No phase-out of service: Parts, refrigerant, and support will remain available for years.
- No need to replace your system: Your existing unit will continue to work normally and remain serviceable.
- We’ve got your back: Our technical support and parts departments will continue to support all R410A models under warranty and beyond.
However, it's important to note that new R410A systems will be phased out from production, and availability will shrink industry-wide.
When Are the New Systems Arriving?
When Are the New Systems Arriving?
We’re actively rolling out our new R32 and R454B-based product lines.
Here's the anticipated schedule:
- First arrivals: Beginning the first week of July 2025
- Ongoing releases: Through July, August, and into early Fall.
- Phaseout complete: R410A inventory will not be restocked once sold out.
Each new model will carry the same reliability and performance Pioneer's known for, just with a more future-proof refrigerant.
