The Refrigerant Transition: What You Need to Know

As part of a nationwide effort to reduce environmental impact and align with global climate policies, the HVAC industry is moving away from R410A refrigerant. At Pioneer, we’re preparing for this shift by launching new systems that use next-generation refrigerants like R32 and R454B.

Here's what this means for you:

Why Is This Transition Happening?

This change is driven by updated U.S. environmental regulations, specifically the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act, which aims to reduce the use of high global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants.

R410A, while widely used, has a relatively high GWP (2088). In contrast:

  • R32 and R454B offer much lower GWP ratings (around 800).
  • Both options are more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.
  • These refrigerants are classified as A2L, meaning they are mildly flammable, but safe when installed per updated code.

The ultimate goal is to transition the HVAC industry toward more sustainable technology without sacrificing performance.
